Healthy Shopping Tips

So here are few quicks tips when grocery chopping that will help reduce your toxic load.

Avoid the following...

Aluminum - so pops, sodas, canned foods, antiperspirants in deodorants, aluminum foil, aluminum pans, etc... are all something you want to avoid as much as you can, aluminum is known to build up in the body and lead to neurodegenerative diseases as well contribute to cancer.

Plastics - cups, bowls, plates, utensils, tupperware, bottles, saran wrap, etc.

It's common knowledge that plastics contain compounds known to cause cancer, but they also leach those compounds into your foods and beverages especially when warmed or heated even by just the food itself being hot. I know plastic is everywhere, but there are a-lot of alternatives.

Glass tupperware, stainless steel tupperware, bamboo cutlery, glass bottles, silicone bags gallon bags, cloth bags for groceries, cloth produce bags, etc.

Try to buy all organic - I know that's asking a-lot so I will say this, buy thin skinned produce organic and thicker skinned produce conventional. The reason being is they say thicker skinned produce absorbs less pesticides. Examples of thick skinned produce include melons, bananas, avocados, etc. Thin skinned produce include greens, berries, apples, pears, etc. Google the Dirty Dozen for an up to date list of foods you really should buy organic.

When buying processed foods please read the ingredients vitamins in the ingredients list indicate they are synthetic and will likely only partially absorbed, if absorbed at all and unrecognizable to the body, stored in fat cells or become waste. So to put it make the that really short, vitamins DO NOT belong in your ingredients list. Many processed foods are high in sugar and sodium so make sure to close to that in the your nutrition labels. Also when reading your ingredients lists there should be actual food, spices, oils, etc. not chemical compounds that aren't already common knowledge to you. So if you have to google to figure out what it is, it's probably best to put it back. The words fortified, pasteurized, concentrate, isolate, modified, enriched, proprietary blend, reconstituted, etc (just in case a missed one) do not belong in your ingredients lists. Avoid them all as much as you can.

A five-digit number starting with a 9 means the item is Organic.

A four-digit code starting with a 3 or a 4 means the produce is conventionally grown. 

A five-digit code starting with an 8 means the item is genetically modified common genetically modified produce include cornsoybeans, canola, cotton, papaya, alfalfa, sugar beets, zucchini, and squash.

Spend more time in the produce section and bulk foods section and you come out with a-lot less processed foods and plenty of healthy whole foods. That was my little tid bit for healthier grocery shopping, below you will find my grocery list right click to download and enjoy!
